Why Business Strategy Comes First

It’s no secret that in today’s digital world, marketing gets most of the spotlight. Scroll through Instagram and you’ll see endless conversations about content creation, paid ads, SEO hacks, and algorithms.
But here’s the truth that often gets overlooked: before you nail down your social media strategy, before you launch a marketing campaign, before you even consider which platforms you should be on, you need to start with something much bigger.
You need to start with a business strategy.

Business Strategy Is Your Foundation
Think of your business like building a house. Social media and marketing are the interior styling — they’re what people see, they create the mood, and they make an impression. But no matter how beautiful the styling is, if the foundations aren’t solid, cracks will eventually show.
Your business strategy is that foundation. It answers the fundamental questions:
Where do I want my business to be in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years?
Who am I really serving, and how am I making their lives better?
What does growth actually look like for me — more sales, bigger reach, deeper loyalty, or all of the above?
Without clarity here, every marketing effort becomes guesswork.
Why Marketing Can’t Come First

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of social media trends and marketing tactics. But without a strategy, even the cleverest campaign can fall flat.
I’ve seen it happen countless times in strategy sessions: business owners come to me burnt out from “doing all the right things” online but feeling like nothing is working. They’ve invested in content, tried ads, followed trends — yet the results don’t match the effort.
Nine times out of ten, the issue isn’t the marketing itself. It’s the lack of clarity on the bigger picture. Once we zoom out, we can see exactly why the pieces weren’t connecting.
When your business strategy comes first, your marketing becomes focused. Every post, every email, every campaign has a clear role to play in driving your larger goals forward.
A Practical Example

Let’s say your big-picture goal is to scale into new markets within the next year. If you jump straight to marketing, you might focus on building engagement on Instagram with your current audience.
But if your strategy is clear, your marketing would instead be geared towards:
Speaking to a new audience segment
Positioning your brand as relevant in their market
Adjusting your offers and messaging to suit their needs
Same marketing platforms, completely different approach. And that difference comes from strategy.
The Overlooked Questions

Many business owners don’t pause to ask themselves the hard but necessary questions that shape a solid strategy. Questions like:
What’s my unique edge in a crowded industry?
What’s working right now, and what isn’t?
What internal challenges might stop me from growing (systems, team, pricing)?
How will I measure success beyond just revenue?
The answers aren’t always easy, but they unlock the clarity that marketing alone can’t provide.
Why I Believe Strategy Always Comes First
When I first started my business, I’ll admit — I was guilty of doing things the other way around. I poured my energy into building my presence, creating content, and saying yes to everything, without stopping to ask the bigger questions. And while it looked busy and polished from the outside, behind the scenes, it felt scattered.
The turning point was when I stepped back, defined my bigger goals, and built everything around them. Once the foundation was in place, marketing stopped feeling like a guessing game — it became a tool to move me closer to my vision.
That’s why I’m so passionate about helping other business owners do the same. Because I know firsthand that once you’re clear on your direction, everything else finally clicks into place.

Getting Strategic Together
This is exactly what I focus on in my 1:1 Business & Brand Strategy Sessions.
These aren’t about surface-level fixes. They’re deep, tailored sessions that get to the core of your business — your pain points, your goals, and the vision you’re building towards.
You’ll walk away with:
A clear roadmap that connects your goals to practical steps
Brand positioning that aligns with your bigger vision
Confidence in making decisions that move you forward with purpose
Instead of patching holes or chasing trends, you’ll have a strategy that gives you clarity, focus, and momentum.

Marketing is powerful. Branding is essential. Social media is non-negotiable. But none of these work to their full potential without a strategy to guide them.
If you’ve been feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next move, it might not be your marketing that needs fixing — it might be your strategy.
